Frequently Asked Questions
A few things we get asked — and a few we think are worth asking.
What is MK Workshop?
MK Workshop is a Brooklyn- and Austin-based interior design studio founded by Jonah Kilday and Petra McKenzie. We create interiors that feel lived-in and intentional — a balance of craft, comfort, and character. Whether it’s a single room or a full renovation, our goal is always the same: design that reflects how you actually live.
Where does MK Workshop work?
We take on projects throughout New York City (Brooklyn, Manhattan, Hudson Valley), Austin and surrounding areas, and select out-of-state projects. If the fit feels right, we’ll find a way to make it work — in person or remotely.
What types of projects do you take on?
We work across residential and commercial spaces, including:
– Full-home renovations
– Kitchens, baths, and apartment interiors
– Townhouses, bungalows, brownstones
– Hospitality and creative studios
– Custom furniture and rugs through MK Objects
What is your design style?
Modern with warmth. We lean into natural materials, layered textures, and clean-lined custom work. Our spaces feel timeless, grounded, and personal — not overly styled.
How does your design process work?
It starts with a conversation and a site visit. Then we move through:
– Concept and moodboarding
– Layouts and material selections
– Final design package and budget
– Collaboration with contractors or trades
– Styling and installation
Do you offer remote or e-design services?
Yes. Remote clients receive detailed layouts, renderings, and mailed samples. Our process stays collaborative and personal — no matter the zip code.
How long does a typical project take?
– Styling or sourcing: 4–6 weeks
– Furnishing projects: 2–4 months
– Renovations: 3–9 months (depending on build scope)
We’ll give you a clear timeline up front.
Can you help with just sourcing furniture or decor?
Yes. We assist with:
– Trade-only furniture
– Custom upholstery
– Lighting and rugs
– Vintage and artisan pieces
Including pieces from our own MK Objects line.
Do you manage construction and installs?
We coordinate with builders, millworkers, and fabricators to bring your design to life — ensuring execution matches vision. We’re not GCs, but we stay hands-on until the final detail is in place.
